The Shaheed Hospital at Dalli-Rajhara, Chhattisgarh was born out of a dream by Late Shankar Guha Neogi, the famous militant non-violent trade union leader who was killed by a henchman of the capitalists at Bhilai in 1992. He dreamt of a hospital for the toiling masses built by them ("mehanatkasho ke swastha ke liye, mehanatkasho ka apna karyakram ").
Way back in 1981 two doctors, Ashis Kundu and Vinayak Sen joined 'Neogiji' (as he was popularly called) to share his dream and put it into practice followed by a fellow medicos named Pabitra Guha. Next year Dr. Saibal Jana joined them and remains to be the only one who still remains as the senior most doctor to run the hospital and besides medicine, he practices surgery and obstetrics-gynaecology with equal efficiency.
The hospital earned its name from the eleven contract workers who braved police firing for their demands and laid down their lives on 2-3 June of 1977 at Dalli-Rajhara while striking under the Chhattisgarh Mines Sramik Sangh (CMSS). On the martyr's day of 3 June, 1983, the hospital was opened by an old miner Lahar Singh and an old peasant Halal Khor, symbolizing worker-peasant alliance, with 15 beds and an outdoor clinic that operated 6 days a week in both the morning and evening shifts.
Soon these efforts transformed into a big people's health movement and the team of doctors and health workers increased their capacity to 60 beds by 1994. For education, the union built school buildings withvoluntary labour and savings of workers and later gave it to government to run the schools.CMSS led successful struggle to provide sanitary facilities in worker's 'bastis'. This promisingcreative struggle for an alternative development attracted many youth activists from different parts of the country to participate and contribute.
Today Shaheed Hospital is a 120 bedded hospital serving a catchment area of more than 100 km around. It provides an all-round health facilities like medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, dentistry, paediatrics and physical medicine at a very reasonable cost serving the population with humble livelihood. It runs an updated pathological laboratory and outpatient services are open 6 days in a week. It also houses the ICTC centre under National AIDS Control Organization and a DOT centre for tuberculosis. Shaheed Hospital is a champion of providing services to poor people under Rashtriya Suraksha Bima Yojana.
Shaheed Hospital runs with fees for their services and contributions from workers, peasants and other friends and as a policy does not receive any money from any funding agencies. It still attracts health volunteers across the country and also abroad to serve to the dream of Shankar Guha Neogi as a collective.
